Ten Questions you Should Ask an Electrician

If you’re thinking of hiring an electrician or an emergency electrician there are some things you need to consider first before going ahead. You want to be safe in the knowledge your electrician is qualified and trained to do his/her job, and to do that there a few steps you can take to ensure you’ve got the right person.

Are they a member of a government approved scheme?

The first thing to establish is whether or not they are a member of a government approved scheme. An electrician who is a member of such a scheme will be able to take on complex work, and it’ll come with additional protection should anything go wrong. You can check an individual’s registration by getting in touch with those running the scheme.

Just how qualified are they?

Check out their training records as well, how qualified are they to do their jobs, how much complex work can they take on? If they’re registered with an approved government scheme, chances are they’ve taken on relevant training that makes them more than qualified to take on complicated jobs that take time and care.

Does your electrician outsource any work?

You want to know who’ll be working in your house, for instance does he/she outsource any work and if so who to? You want to know that anyone hired is as qualified as he/she is.

Have they done this type of work before?

You could also ask what experience they have and whether or not they’ve done the specific work you’re having done, before. Also, is their quote a fixed one, is it by the hour, and are all materials included in the quote? Will they clear up after they’ve finished, or is it the case that you’ll be expected to clear up any mess after they’ve gone?

How long will work take?

You’ll need to know how long any work is going to take. You should be given an estimate and if there’s going to be any delay, then confirmation in plenty of time, so you know exactly what’s going on.
