Your Guide to Interior Lighting

In this week’s post we’re taking a look at indoor lighting and interior lighting installations. We love working with our clients and helping to create the perfect lighting in a home, the lasting effects and the difference it can make is phenomenal. Take it from us, we know, because we see the transformation ourselves. However, it’s not always easy to choose the right kind of interior lighting or achieve the look you’re after. So, let’s take a look at what we can do with interior lighting and how it can enhance and amplify all that’s good in your individual rooms.

What is your room’s function, is it a bedroom, study, kitchen?

Think about the room that is having the lighting changes, what will you be doing in this room, will you be spending a lot of time in it? How much or how little light do you require, do you like a lot or a little, brighter or dimmer? Is your room already getting a lot of natural light?

Space and shape.

Look at the space in your room, try to understand its shape and size, where the light comes from at present and this will help inform what you can do with it. Lighting works well when it’s layered, and there are roughly 3 types of lighting and you should use all three in each room. The 3 types are ambient, accent and task.

Task lighting carries out the task of lighting a particular area, it does what it says on the tin. They’ll help you carry out tasks, so this type of lighting is functional in nature. We’re talking lights over a kitchen worktop or a desk light at your computer.

Ambient lighting is for the entire room, it allows you to move around in plenty of light – and it’s obviously useful when you have elderly relatives visiting whose sight has deteriorated. It’ll come from lights overhead, from a recess, on a track or mounted on a wall.

Accent lighting is as the word suggests gives a light ‘accent’ to a room, focusing on a particular point, for instance you may have it over a painting so it can be better seen, again they’ll be mounted on a wall, on a track and sometimes they’ll be in the form of dimmers so there’s more of a moody feel to it.

RML Electrical – for lighting and electrical work that sets the tone.

As you can see there’s a lot you can do with your lighting. It can really set the tone and mood, as long as you think about it first, and think about how you’re going to use it, you should be able to create something special.
